Fusing experimental literature, new music, performance and video art, The EVP Sessions is inspired by parapsychologist Konstantin Raudive\u2019s infamous observations of \u2018Electronic Voice Phenomena\u2019 – ghostly murmurs and \u00a0vocal glitches heard in radio and tape players.<\/p>\n
Artists drawn from across the UK and Europe will respond to Raudive\u2019s provocation in three pairs of live shows at The Bluecoat in Liverpool and Shoreditch Town Hall in London. These atmospheric, historic venues will be rewired with haunting performances and new commissions. And in August, audiences north of the border will be given a sneak preview as The EVP Sessions comes to Edinburgh International Book Festival for one night only.<\/p>\n

Highlights include: Booker-nominated novelist Tom McCarthy<\/strong> (pictured above) – dubbed \u2018Kafka of the Google age\u2019 – collaborating with live coders Shelly Knotts<\/strong> and Alo Allik<\/strong> to reimagine Satin Island<\/em>; a performance by \u2018weird and uncompromising\u2019 (Guardian) electronic music producer Aisha Devi <\/strong>(pictured above); and new video work by multimedia artist Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n For co-producer Tom Chivers, the Sessions are a chance for audiences to<\/p>\n discover a new generation of artists, musicians and writers grappling with what it is to be human in the digital age<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n whilst Nathan Jones of Mercy comments<\/p>\n the programme captures a distinct moment for vocal prosthetics and pseudo-linguistic intelligence, and shows how vital they are to the future of performance<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The programme also includes experimental vocalists Sue Tompkins <\/strong>and Hannah Silva<\/strong>; spoken word artists Inua Ellams <\/strong>(pictured below), Harry Giles<\/strong> and Antosh Wojcik<\/strong>; sound artist Ain Bailey<\/strong>; doom-folk songstress Perera Elsewhere <\/strong>(pictured below); theatre-maker and game-designer Hannah Nicklin<\/strong>; and digital artist Erica Scourti<\/strong>; performance aritsts Alexis Milne<\/strong> and Jennet Thomas<\/strong>; textual sculptor Katrina Palmer<\/strong>. Each event features new ambient audio-visual work by Kepla<\/strong> with DeForrest Brown Junior<\/strong>, and is hosted by mercurial poet-raconteur Ross Sutherland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The EVP Sessions is produced by two of the UK\u2019s most pioneering alternative literature companies: Mercy<\/a> (Liverpool) and Penned in the Margins<\/a> (London). Their previous collaboration, Electronic Voice Phenomena, toured the country in 2013 and was dubbed \u201cmind-boggling\u201d and \u201cperplexingly good\u201d by audience members.
