Penned in the Margins gathered with over twenty poetry publishers and small presses in a defiant statement of grass-roots literary entrepreneurialism amidst the cuts that look set to, if they have not already, damage the cultural life of this country. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetrybooks.co.uk\">The Poetry Book Society<\/a>, stalwart of the British poetry scene since 1950something yet still, somehow victims of a 100% cut in funding from the Arts Council, were there. So was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saltpublishing.com\">Salt<\/a>&#8216;s <strong>Chris Hamilton Emery<\/strong>, a real and relentless innovator. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ninearchespress.com\">Nine Arches<\/a> from the West Midlands, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carcanet.co.uk\">Carcanet<\/a> from Manchester, <strong>Nii Parkes<\/strong>&#8216; dynamic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flippedeye.net\">Flipped Eye<\/a>, new enterprises such as <a href=\"http:\/www.drfulminare.com\/publications.html\">Sidekick Books<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wardwoodpublishing.co.uk\">Ward Wood<\/a>, experimental DIY presses such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zimzalla.co.uk\">zimZalla<\/a>, and more besides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Horovitz<\/strong> opened proceedings, and there were readings throughout the day &#8211; rather wonderfully, these were tucked away two floors above the hall in a small classroom &#8211; it was a bizarre, mini-adventure just to find it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/speak-to-strangers\/\">Gemma Seltzer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2010\/10\/kalagora\/\">Siddhartha Bose<\/a> read for Penned in the Margins &#8211; two completely different voices that I hope represent the diversity of styles you&#8217;ll find in our books and events. At one point during Sid&#8217;s set, the lights in the room suddenly went off. I had leant against the lightswitch of course. Genius.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We sold loads of books, which was fantastic, and what was particularly pleasing was that almost every book we&#8217;ve released sold at least one copy. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2010\/09\/stress-fractures-essays-on-poetry\/\">Stress Fractures<\/a> completely sold out, and <strong>Emily Critchley<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2011\/02\/love-all-that-ok\/\">Love \/ All That \/ &amp; OK<\/a> proved popular too. It was great having the opportunity to speak to people, recommend books to them, and talk about the press and how it&#8217;s developed in the last five years. It&#8217;s not something I get to do very often!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/freeverse5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New contacts were made, and old friendships reaffirmed. Lovely to see the likes of <strong>Adam Horovitz<\/strong>, <strong>Nii Parkes<\/strong>, <strong>Katy Evans-Bush<\/strong>,<strong> Tammy Yoseloff<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Holifield<\/strong>, <strong>Judith Palmer <\/strong>(reinstated Poetry Society Director &#8211; woop!)<strong>, Alex McDonald, Ben Borek, Christopher Reid<\/strong>, <strong>Tim Wells<\/strong>, <strong>Jody Porter<\/strong>, <strong>Roddy Lumsden<\/strong>, and the list goes on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to Charles Boyle for his energy, charm and persistence in putting together such a positive and well-organised day.
