The book, for all its undercurrents and complexities, is a frank and militant declaration of joy \u2013 gay in a double sense of the word \u2013 and should be taken very seriously.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCullough said, &#8220;I&#8217;m absolutely thrilled that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reckless Paper Birds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has led to me joining the prestigious list of winners of the Hawthornden prize. Writing this collection felt like a risk for me with its explorations of vulnerability &#8211; I had to travel to deep places inside me I hadn&#8217;t visited before.
