{"id":20209,"date":"2021-06-08T07:57:24","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T07:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/?p=20209"},"modified":"2021-06-08T07:57:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T07:57:25","slug":"penned-in-the-margins-authors-kennard-and-mccullough-shortlisted-in-2021-forward-prizes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/penned-in-the-margins-authors-kennard-and-mccullough-shortlisted-in-2021-forward-prizes\/","title":{"rendered":"Penned in the Margins authors Kennard and McCullough shortlisted in 2021 Forward Prizes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the \u2018joyously unclassifiable\u2019 (Guardian) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/04\/notes-on-the-sonnets\/\"><i>Notes on the Sonnets<\/i><\/a>, Kennard recasts Shakespeare&#8217;s 154 sonnets as a series of anarchic prose poems set in the same joyless house party. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/12\/john-mccullough\/\">McCullough<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Flower of Sulphur\u2019 was first published in <i>Poetry London<\/i> and will be part of his new collection <i>Panic Response<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/penned-in-the-margins-acquires-fourth-collection-from-award-winning-poet-john-mccullough\/\">to be published<\/a> in spring 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/classic\/images\/blog\/notesonthesonnets_draft_square.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Forward Prizes for Poetry are the most influential awards for new poetry in the UK and Ireland, honouring fresh voices alongside internationally established names. The 2021 judging panel was chaired by broadcaster and writer James Naughtie. This is not the first time Penned in the Margins authors have been shortlisted: in 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/09\/the-perseverance\/\"><i>The Perseverance<\/i><\/a> by Raymond Antrobus was shortlisted for Best First Collection, while in 2016 Melissa Lee-Houghton\u2019s poem \u2018i am very precious\u2019 (from her book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/08\/sunshine\/\"><i>Sunshine<\/i><\/a>) was shortlisted for Best Single Poem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>John McCullough says, \u201c&#8217;Flower of Sulphur&#8217; arrived after I&#8217;d had a year away from writing owing to ill health. When I returned, I felt suddenly able to tackle areas I&#8217;d found too painful to write about before, using experimental forms.
